Having a home that is properly insulated can save you a ton of money on your energy bills—especially in the heat of summer. But unfortunately, most people don’t know how poorly insulated their house actually is. They just assume that everyone runs their air conditioning unit excessively all summer long. It isn’t until they take some steps to insulate their home that they realize how much heat their house was letting in.
One of the main culprits in a poorly insulated house is typically its windows. If your house has drafty windows with aluminum frames and only a single pane of glass, they are doing very little to keep out the heat. Even if you don’t feel an obvious draft coming in from around your windows, your old windows still probably aren’t keeping out the heat very well.
On a hot day, if you touch the glass of your windows, is it hot? You might be thinking, “Of course it is.” But it doesn’t have to be this way. Even though glass on its own is a poor insulator, modern replacement windows have a lot of other technology built into them to help keep out the heat, while still allowing in natural light.
First of all, the replacement windows we sell for Fremont homes come with two high-quality panes of glass. Dual pane windows are much more effective at keeping out heat than single pane windows. For further insulation, you can choose to add a special gas in between the two panes of glass, such as Argon or Krypton.
Our replacement windows also have a microscopic film on the glass that helps reflect infrared light from the sun, keeping the heat outside where it belongs. This type of glass is known as Low-E glass. As an added bonus, Low-E glass helps keep out UV rays, which can fade and damage your home’s furnishings.
The material the frames are made from contributes to the insulating abilities of replacement windows as well. Many older windows are made with aluminum frames. Since aluminum is a good conductor of heat, it doesn’t do much to keep heat from passing through the frames. However, vinyl frames, which is what a majority of the windows we sell have, do a great job of keeping out heat! Vinyl is a very affordable material, which helps to keep the cost of our replacement windows down.
